One Year to Grow – The Parable of the Fig Tree
Have you ever felt like you’ve been in the same place spiritually for too long? Like you’ve been going through the motions, but the growth just isn’t there? Maybe you’ve even sensed God whispering, “It’s time to grow. You can’t stay here forever.”
In Luke 13:6–9, Jesus tells a short but powerful parable that speaks directly to that feeling — the parable of the barren fig tree.
The Parable
Luke 13:6–9 (ESV)
“A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”
Breaking It Down
In this story:
- The man represents God the Father.
- The fig tree represents His people — you and me.
- The vineyard is the place God has planted us.
- The vinedresser is Jesus, interceding for mercy on our behalf.
For three years, the man came looking for fruit and found none. This is a picture of God patiently looking for real change — not just empty words, but a life that shows love, obedience, and repentance.
Then Jesus steps in and says, “Give it one more year. Let me work on it. Let me dig around it and feed it.”
That’s grace. That’s mercy. It’s God saying, “I’m giving you more time — but don’t waste it.”
The One Year Season
Some of us are in that “one more year” season right now. God is giving us time to:
- Root out what’s holding us back
- Let His Word and Spirit nourish us
- Start producing visible fruit — love, kindness, patience, boldness in sharing the Gospel
But the parable ends with a warning: if there’s still no fruit, the tree will be cut down. Grace is real, but it’s not endless. God’s patience is meant to lead us to repentance (Romans 2:4).
How to Respond
- Ask God to search your heart – Psalm 139:23–24
- Get rooted in His Word – John 15:4–5
- Let Him prune you – John 15:2
- Be intentional about growth – Ephesians 5:15–16
Final Challenge
If this is your “one year to grow,” what will you do with it?
Don’t put it off for “someday.” Start today. Ask Jesus to dig around your roots, to pour living water on your life, and to help you bear fruit that will last.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your mercy and patience with me. Thank You for giving me another season to grow. Dig out anything that’s blocking my roots from going deeper in You. Nourish me with Your Word, prune me where needed, and help me bear fruit that brings You glory. I don’t want to waste this time You’ve given me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
