Love is a word we hear every day—sung in songs, spoken in vows, printed on cards—but rarely do we stop to ask: What is real love?
The World’s Version vs. God’s Version
The world defines love as a feeling—fleeting, emotional, often self-centered. But the Bible flips that on its head. Love, according to God, is not just about how we feel. It’s about how we choose to act. It’s selfless. It’s sacrificial. It’s holy.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude.”
—1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (ESV)
That kind of love doesn’t come naturally. It comes supernaturally. The kind of love that forgives the unforgivable, serves without expecting anything back, and lays down its life for others—that’s the love God poured out on the cross.
Jesus: The Perfect Picture of Love
The greatest example of love the world has ever known is Jesus Christ. He didn’t wait for us to be perfect before loving us.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
—Romans 5:8
He loved the broken, the outcasts, the proud, and the lost—and He still does. Love wasn’t something Jesus just preached. It was something He lived.
Love Is a Command, Not a Suggestion
Jesus didn’t say, “Love others if you feel like it.” He said:
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
—John 13:34
If we’re following Jesus, love isn’t optional—it’s essential. Love is the evidence that we know God.
“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
—1 John 4:8
But What If It’s Hard to Love?
Let’s be honest—loving others isn’t always easy. People are messy. Some will hurt you. Some won’t love you back. But here’s the truth: We don’t love others because they deserve it. We love because He deserves it. We love because He first loved us.
You’re not called to love with your own strength. You’re called to be a vessel of God’s love flowing through you.
Final Thoughts
Love isn’t a feeling. It’s a choice. A lifestyle. A testimony.
If you want to change the world, start by loving like Jesus. Not just in words, but in action. Not just the easy people, but the hard ones too.
Let’s stop chasing shallow love that fades and start walking in the deep, unshakable love of Christ.
Because real love looks like the cross.
