Romans 12:6 says:
“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith.”
At first glance, this phrase may feel a little mysterious. What does it mean to prophesy “in proportion to our faith”?
God Is the Source
Prophecy is not something we create or imagine—it comes from God. Scripture says, “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). That means prophecy is never about showing off spiritual greatness. It’s about God speaking through His people.
Faith Is the Measure
The word “proportion” points us to faith as the measure or limit. God gives each believer a measure of faith (Romans 12:3). When He gives a prophetic word, we are called to speak it according to the faith He has entrusted to us.
This keeps us from two dangers:
- Going beyond faith: Adding to what God has said, exaggerating, or speaking from our own imagination.
- Shrinking back in fear: Refusing to speak when God has truly given a word, out of worry about what others will think.
Growing in the Gift
Like every gift of the Spirit, prophecy grows as we walk in obedience. Hebrews 5:14 says our senses are trained by practice. When we step out in faith—always in humility and in line with Scripture—God strengthens us to hear Him more clearly and trust Him more fully.
Always in Line with Scripture
Any prophecy must agree with the Word of God. Faith anchors us to His truth. If a word does not line up with Scripture, it is not from Him. Faith keeps us steady, guarding us from error or deception.
For Building Up Others
Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 14:3 that “the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.” Prophecy isn’t about drawing attention to ourselves; it’s about strengthening the church and pointing people to Jesus.
Final Thought
Prophecy in proportion to our faith simply means this: we speak what God has given us, no more and no less, trusting Him with the measure of faith He has placed in us. We don’t have to force it, and we don’t have to fear it. We simply pour out what He has poured in.
“Whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 4:11)
